🔹 What is 3D Scanning?

3D scanning is the process of transferring a physical object into a digital environment using special optical or laser-based devices. Thanks to this technology, a real-world part can be measured with millimeter precision and transformed into a one-to-one digital model in a computer environment.

During the scanning process, the device detects thousands or even millions of points on a surface and combines this data to create a dataset called a "point cloud." This data is then processed and converted into a mesh (STL) or CAD model. Thus, a physical object gains a digital form that can be used in manufacturing and engineering processes.

🔹 How does 3D scanning work?

3D scanning systems typically use light projection or laser technology. The scanner projects light onto the object's surface and analyzes the reflected data to calculate the geometric structure.

This process consists of the following steps:

  1. Data Collection:
    The scanner takes millions of measurement points from the surface of the part.

  2. Point Cloud Generation:
    The collected data are combined to create a 3D point cloud.

  3. Creating a Mesh (STL):
    The points are connected to form a surface, which is then converted to STL format.

  4. CAD Modeling (Optional):
    If necessary, a technical model can be created from this data that can be edited in software such as SolidWorks.
